Non-Native Animals On The Loose In London
London and wildlife aren't things that mix all that often. Sure, the outer boroughs do well, what with the Richmond deer and all, but the closest an inner-city Londoner normally gets to wildlife is being disturbed at 3 am on a summer morning by a wailing pair of mating foxes, only to be woken up a couple of hours later by the dawn chorus. Beyond this, a whole host of non-native and exotic wildlife has made London its home, and although these species aren't quite as headline-worthy as the Thames whale or the Essex lion, they're still here.

Flamingos at Kensington Roof Gardens

Photo:
OK, so strictly speaking these aren't 'on the loose', but most people strolling down Kensington High Street are unaware of Bill, Ben, Splosh and Pecks, the flamingos who inhabit Kensington Roof Gardens. Less well-known residents of the Roof Gardens include Carolina and Mandarin ducks, New Zealand Scaups, goldfish and crayfish.

Peacocks in Holland Park

The Japanese/Kyoto Gardens in this other green oasis in Kensington are home to free-roaming peacocks. In the past, locals have been warned that the birds are likely to wander outside of their usual territory during mating season.

Pelicans in St James' Park

Regular visitors to St James' Park barely bat an eyelid at the presence of the pelican colony, but they haven't always been there. They were introduced as a gift from the Russian ambassador in 1664 and have bred there ever since. They have been known to be over-friendly towards park-goers, but just be grateful that pelicans are all you come eye-to-eye with these days: when James I took the throne in 1603, he had camels, crocodiles and an elephant kept in the park.

Parakeets

Although they originally populated South East London with New Cross and Lewisham being good places to spot them, parakeet colonies have since been spotted as far afield in the capital as Borehamwood, Carshalton Beeches, Catford and Richmond. In fact, as far back  they have been recorded in all 33 London boroughs

Trump wins in South Carolina, Clintonvictorious in Nevada

Billionaire New York businessman Donald Trump assembled a going-away victory in the South Carolina Republican presidential primary election on Saturday, outdistancing Texas Sen. Ted Cruz and Florida Sen. Marco Rubio who were in a close race for second.
Among Democrats in the western state of Nevada, Hillary Clinton captured victory, overcoming an unexpectedly strong surge by Bernie Sanders and potentially easing the anxiety of some of her supporters.
In the South Carolina race, former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush and other candidates were lagging well behind, according to early returns.
Clinton won the backing of voters who said electability and experience were important in their vote. But in a continuing sign of her vulnerability, Sanders did best with voters looking for a candidate who is caring and honest

Double car bombing kills 46 in Syria’s

Homs: Monitor

syria

At least 46 people were killed and dozens injured on Sunday in a double car bomb attack in the central Syrian city of Homs, a monitor said.
The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said most of those killed appeared to be civilians, adding that the toll could rise further because of the number of seriously wounded.
Syrian state television gave a toll of at least 25 dead, citing Homs provincial governor Talal Barazi.
It broadcast footage from the scene of the attack in the Al-Zahraa neighbourhood, showing the air thick with dust and smoke rising from blazes started by the blasts.
Firefighters ran through debris strewn by the explosions as security forces and civilians tried to open the wreckage of one vehicle to retrieve a person inside.
Nearby, a charred body was carried away on a stretcher by emergency services workers.

At least seven people are dead after a series of western Michigan shootings in which authorities say they believe a gunman chose victims at random.
Authorities say a 45-year-old man was arrested early Sunday in Kalamazoo.
Kalamazoo County Undersheriff Paul Matyas says the rampage began about 6 p.m. Saturday outside an apartment complex on the eastern edge of the Kalamazoo County, where a woman was shot multiple times and seriously wounded.
A little more than four hours later and 15 miles away, a father and son were fatally shot while looking at vehicles at a car dealership.
Matyas says 15 minutes after that, five people – including a 14-year-old girl – were gunned down in the parking lot of a Cracker Barrel restaurant.
Matyas described the killings as “random murders.”

Collins' Comments: 22 February 2016
I am predicting it will be a busy year for all of us and one in which we will be making some quite big decisions as the second flag referendum occurs in March, and local Council and local board elections occur in the latter part of the year around October.
The Government’s agenda is full and the Prime Minister in his Statement to Parliament last week outlined the Government’s comprehensive policy agenda and substantial legislative programme to put before the House this year.
This will reflect National’s four priorities – responsible management of the taxpayers’ money, building a more productive and competitive economy, delivering better public services, and supporting the rebuild of Christchurch.

Jamaat Convention: Sirajul Haq says Pakistan going through difficult times

QUETTA: The Ameer of Jamaat-e-Islami Senator Sirajul Haq has said that Pakistan is undergoing a difficult time mostly due to insiders who have damaged the country in the name of Islam, however some foreign hands were also involved.
Addressing the Nifaz-e-Islam Convention organised by Islami Jamiat Talaba, he said that Islamic Sharia had not been implemented in the country for even a single day due to the conspiracies hatched by the enemy, adding that “we want to see an Islamic system in Pakistan where the Chief Justice of Pakistan takes guidance from the Holy Quran.”
He said that aristocracy in the form of Chaudhrys, Nawabs and Sardars are eating at the very roots of Pakistan, adding that no difference can be seen in the collective social life of Pakistani Muslims and the Indian population, as both countries take guidance from our co-inherited British legal literature

Artist depicts Chinese rock stars as colossal mountain temples

Chinese artist Du Kun's "Revels of the Rock Gods" series features intricate depictions of Chinese rock stars as mountain temples.
Beijing
Artist Du Kun juxtaposes traditional Chinese values and modern western ideas in his massive oil paintings, which depict Chinese rock stars embedded in traditional mountaintop temples.
Hair is painted as cascading waterfalls, verdant tree canopies and gnarled roots, while noses are Buddhist deities, and necks are elaborately detailed worship halls.

"Revels of the Rock Gods" is currently shown at an exhibition at the Mizuma Art Gallery in Tokyo.
The images are also reminiscent of the hallucinatory portraits of Italian renaissance artist Giuseppe Arcimboldo.

The work takes cues from traditional Chinese landscape paintings, some of which date as far back as as the Southern Song Dynasty (1127-1279).
The images are also reminiscent of the hallucinatory portraits of Italian renaissance artist Giuseppe Arcimboldo.
Evocatively titled "Revels of the Rock Gods," Du's 2-meter (6.5 ft) high portraits are now being exhibited at the Mizuma Art Gallery in Tokyo this month.
Du says the series is a reflection of his generation's worldview.
"Those of us born in the 1980s were heavily influenced by traditional Buddhist or Confucian values, but also grew up with the great impact of western ideas. We live in a great transformative era in China."
