losing in on Aleppo, foreign Shiite fighters tighten grip on Syria

Syrians gather at the Bab al-Salam border gate with Turkey, in Syria, Saturday, Feb. 6
Officials in the EU have urged Turkey to let in tens of thousands of Syrian refugees trapped on its border at Kilis after fleeing fighting.
EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini said there was a moral, if not legal, duty to provide protection.
Turkey says the refugees are receiving food and shelter inside Syria and there is no need to allow them to cross.
About 35,000 Syrians have fled a Syrian government offensive on rebel-held positions near Aleppo

Why some African governments are clamping down on churches

South African constitution
Worshippers dance in thanks to God for the election of Ghana's new President John Atta-Mills (unseen) during thanks giving worship service at the Pure Fire Miracle Church at Achimota, in Accra on January 4, 2009.
This means the constitution protects everyone's religion, as long as it acts within ambit of the law - this also makes it easy for anyone to start a church.
Reverend Moss Nthla of the Evangelical Alliance of South Africa, which has more than three million members, accepts that the Christian family is facing many challenges but says the government cannot be called upon to address spiritual matters.
"It is difficult to see how the government would regulate churches; we've ... reports of politicians themselves being faithful members of some of these controversial churches - some of which are a law unto themselves."

Pets of the week for Sunday, Feb. 7,

Diesel

Diesel is a 5½-year-old neutered Labrador mix, current on his vaccinations. He is a handsome, intelligent and affectionate dog, and he as a typical lovable Labrador that would love to be your walking buddy. His previous owner said he could be territorial and sometimes didn’t like other dogs. We will require a dog-meet at the humane society before adoption. He would do best in a home with respectful children 10 and older. He doesn’t like to be crated, and his previous owners allowed him to roam in the house when he was left unattended. He is intelligent, and he knows “sit,” “lie down,” “shake” and “high-five.”

North Korea launches space rocket; defies threats
South Koreans watch a TV news program with a file footage about North Korea's rocket launch plans, at Seoul Railway Station in Seoul, South Korea, Wednesday, Feb. 3, 2016. South Korea warned on Wednesday of "searing" consequences if North Korea doesn't abandon plans to launch a long-range rocket that critics call a banned test of ballistic missile technology. SEOUL, South Korea — North Korea launched a long-range rocket on Sunday, violating UN resolutions and doubling down against an international community already determined to punish Pyongyang for a nuclear test last month.
North Korea had labelled the launch part of a purely scientific space programme, but most of the world viewed it as a disguised ballistic missile test and the nuclear-armed state’s latest step towards a weapons delivery system capable of striking the US mainland.
